How to Evaluate Dental Cavities in Horses

چکیده

The goal of dentistry is to preserve functional dentition to promote the general health, longevity, and productivity of the horse; however, throughout recorded equine dental history, exodontia has been the primary treatment for diseased teeth. This treatment predisposes the equine dentition to subsequent periodontal disease, malocclusion, and additional tooth loss. Restorative dentistry is the dental discipline concerned with the treatment, repair, and conservation of teeth broken down by trauma or decay. The indications for restorative dentistry include dental decay, resorptive lesions, crown fractures, attrition, congenital anomalies, enamel hypoplasia, and access closure of an endodontically treated tooth. Although dental caries has been recognized in horses for over a century, these cavities have been therapeutically ignored until the last decade. The early and accurate diagnosis of a cavity can make restorative treatment a realistic option for preserving a functional tooth. Evaluation of cavities is one component in a complete dental examination.

Objectives: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the microleakage of cervical cavities prepared by Er:YAG laser or high-speed hand piece and bur. Methods: This in vitro experimental study was performed on 40 sound permanent third molar teeth randomly assigned into two equal groups (n=20). In the first group, high-speed hand piece and bur and in the second group Er:YAG la...

Comparative Evaluation of Fracture Strength of Cusp Coverage with Composite Versus Unsupported Enamel Reinforced with Composite in Posterior Dental Restorations

Background and aim: Efficient bonding techniques should be employed for strengthening tooth structure. Whether to preserve intact dental tissue or to sacrifice some undermined parts can still be challenging. We aimed to evaluate the fracture strength of cusp coverage with composite versus unsupported enamel reinforced with composite in posterior restorations. Materials and methods: In this in...

The Effect of Dental Bonding Agent of Excite on the Rate of Microleakage in Class V Amalgam Restorations

Aim: This study was done to evaluate the rate of microleakage in class V amalgam restorations in which the dental bonding agent (DBA) Excite was used as a sealer beneath the restorations. Methods: four amalgam restorative materials with commercial names of Dentam, Cinalux, Tytin and SDI (GS-80) were used. Seventy sound human premolars were selected and randomly divided into 4 groups of 15 teeth...

How to Interpret Cytology From Body Cavity Effusions

Abdominocentesis and thoracocentesis are commonly used diagnostic tools in equine practice. Abdominocentesis is one of the standard diagnostic tests used in evaluating colic patients and is often performed to (1) differentiate strangulating from nonstrangulating lesions; (2) confirm gastrointestinal rupture; (3) document, evaluate, and monitor peritonitis as well as the identify-specific microo...
